Originating in Germany, this cake was supposed to conjure up romantic feelings of darkness and mystery coming out of the forest of loneliness. The darkness certainly makes itself present in the rich, dark chocolate that the Germans are so well known for. Perhaps the gorgeous red, ripe maraschino cherries evoke feelings of love and romance.
